Abstract
Contemporary cognitive models emphasize the importance of trauma-related negative cognitions in posttraumatic stress symptoms(PTSS), and recent research has demonstrated that difficulties in emotion regulation may also play a role in psychological problems. This current study examined the unique effects of trauma-related negative cognitions and difficulties in emotion regulation on PTSS. Two hundred twelve traumatized undergraduate students participated in this study. The results showed that trauma-related negative cognition significantly predicted PTSS after controlling for depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms, as well as difficulties in emotion regulation. Difficulties in emotion regulation also significantly predicted PTSS when the effects of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms were controlled for, whereas its unique effect was not significant after controlling for trauma-related negative cognitions additionally. Of the five dimensions of trauma-related negative cognitions, negative self-concept about future/values and negative self-concept about traumatic reactions each significantly contributed to PTSS. And of the five dimensions of difficulties in emotional regulation, only understanding of emotions significantly contributed to PTSS. These results suggest the importance of psychological interventions aimed at modifying trauma-related negative cognitions, especially negative self-concept about future/values and negative self-concept about traumatic reactions, as well as enhancing understanding of emotions, in order to alleviate PTSS of traumatized university students and to prevent posttraumatic stress disorder.
